Well, twas my...gulp...42nd b'day yesterday and I was in a funk. For some reason, each year past 40 is a bit more weird/difficult. I dunno. It sounds silly, I'm sure, but I don't like it. I don't think I look 42. I KNOW I don't act 42. I sure don't feel 42....well, except for the aches and pains that my body reminds me of.
Anyway, I didn't want to end the day still in a funk, so I took advantage of the nice evening after work (cool and breezy) to tack up Penny mare and hit the Silver Comet Trail. I'm sooooo glad I did!
We had a blast. Penny hasn't moved this good since the day I got her. Turns out, her pelvis and 3 ribs were "out" and 10 minutes with a fantastic equine chiropractor really worked. She was level, smooth and tracking up. She even moved out at a brisk walk away from the barn, something she normally doesn't do until we turn for home.
As we walked along, bikers smiled at us and waved. Penny got compliments (as usual, of course ;D) and my spirits were really lifted. Best of all, as we came upon the spot where the old railway bridge crossing used to be, I saw the remains of a pretty good size tree that had fallen right across the entire SCT bike path. Naturally, the trail caretakers had removed the dead tree from the concrete bike/walk path but HOORAY left the rest along the side where us riders go.
So I took up the reins and asked for a good trot. Over P went and trotted away! Geez, it was small but it felt soooooo great! We walked on for a little ways more but then it was time to turn for home. Of course, we were gonna jump that tree again This time, though, we trotted over and cantered away. Penny felt so good, I let her keep cantering for about 200 yards....again, this is something we don't normally do on the way home because she has a tendency to want to GALLOP home. But the nice, new 5.25" french link I tried on her did the job. She softened right up, didn't fight me and came back to a trot and then walk. I was grinning from ear to ear
We were greeted loudly by Tank and the two paint geldings when we arrived back at the barn. Penny got a nice walk out with her sweatless sheet on and about a half hour later, her warm supper with a few Herb-ball treats.
What a great birthday!
